What we in America are doing in the name of “discipleship” is not working.
Think about it. We have more “discipleship” resources available in the Church today than ever. There are more books, more study guides and video series, more internet sources, and more local churches with “discipleship” pastors on staff than ever before. And yet, as we’ll see in future blogs, we are producing very few true disciples of Jesus Christ. For all our talk about “discipleship,” we in the Body of Christ are not making many real disciples.
Why is this? Why do most Christians hesitate to identify themselves as “followers of Jesus Christ,” let alone claim to be bona fide disciples of His?
If you think you might be one of these who hesitate, let me help you feel a bit better. I think there are some very good reasons why this is the case. Reasons that aren’t your fault. Reasons that are totally understandable. Reasons which, when understood, can give us real hope of growing to new levels spiritually and experiencing more fully the “abundant life” Jesus promises us in John 10:10.
Coming up in future installments of this blog series, we will consider a hypothetical, but not implausible, example. Until then, let us enjoy the journey together as fellow disciplemakers.
Get connected at our next quarterly men's equipping dinner.
We hold four Advancing the Battle dinner conferences a year, focused on rallying men to make disciples of those around them. We will have a meal, a speaker, and time for overcoming hurdles to making disciples. Watch this page and our Facebook feed for updates on the next dinner. We hope to see you there.
